The Text-to-Give fundraiser - "every $5 makes a difference" - is sponsored by the Telluride Foundation, is a new program to encourage everyone to give and to promote community investment with as little as $5. Four organizations will be chosen to participate in the event, where they will work together to raise money in $5 text increments. The Telluride Foundation will match, dollar -for- dollar, the donations raised by each participating organization up to $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, $300 for 3rd place, and $200 for fourth place.

The Telluride Foundation will hold a total four of text-to-give fundraisers during 2010 and will match the amount of donations received by each organization, up to a $2,000 total match per event. The nonprofit Text-To-Give fundraiser categories for 2010 will commence as follows: Health & Human Services from May 28 - July 4; Environment and Animals from August 4 - September 6; Early Childhood Development & Education from November 25 -December 31.

The Text-to-Give fundraiser is an opt-in only, voluntary means for nonprofits to raise donations and communicate with new and existing donors. A donor hears or sees a donation request, responds with the text message (3-4 letter "short code"; for example "HAITI" to 90999) specific to that nonprofit to 90999. Their donation is confirmed by replying to the text message they receives back by texting YES. Upon confirmation, the charge is added to the donor's mobile-phone bill. The charge appears as a tax-deductible donation to the charity of choice on the donor's bill, which can be used as a receipt. The donation is collected by the wireless carrier when the donor pays her next mobile-phone bill.
