TF BOD Approves $125,000 Special Initiative Grant to the Telluride Medical Center
The Telluride Foundation's Board of Directors met on Tuesday, July 6 for their bi-annual meeting. The highlights of the meeting included awarding the Telluride Medical Center a $125,000 Special Initiative Grant for their emergency room re-model; electing six board member's to additional two year term on the board; selecting Tricia Maxon as Chair of the Grants Committee; electing Dan Tishman to the Grants Committee; and hearing about national, state and regional water issues from expert guest speaker David Robbins.


The Board awarded $125,000 Special Initiative Grant to the Telluride Medical Center (TMC) for the remodel of the emergency room facility. The project includes the addition of 330 square feet to the building, conversion of hallways to patient care space, increasing beds, improved patient privacy and an improved work environment. The grant was approved with the Board encouraging TMC to use their best efforts to create an agreement with Blue Cross Blue Shield to accept their insurance in the emergency room.


National legal water expert, David Robbins, president and co-founder of Hill & Robbins, P.C., spoke at the meeting to inform the Board on the key issue of water from a national, state, regional and local perspective. Robbins serves on the Board of the Colorado Water Trust, a nonprofit that supports voluntary efforts to restore and protect stream flows in the state of Colorado. His areas of specialty are water and natural resources law, water quality, and environmental law. Mr. Robbins explained the complexities of water rights, Colorado's prior appropriation system, and the numerous interstate compacts that control Colorado's rivers. Mr. Robbins highlighted to the Board that the mesas surrounding Telluride would not be as green as they were today without the aid of irrigation ditches and agricultural water rights and that deciding how to use Colorado's and the local region's limited water supplies was all about choices and balance.


The Board of Directors elected six board members for renewed two year terms. Davis Fansler, Kevin Holbrook, Tricia Maxon, Melanie Montoya, Brian O'Neill and George Parker were elected to serve on the Board of Directors for the Telluride Foundation. The Board also selected Tricia Maxon, Telluride President of Community Banks of Colorado, to a one year term as chair of the Grants Committee and elected Dan Tishman, CEO of Tishman Construction, to a one three year term as a member of the Grants Committee.


The Foundation's Board of Directors is responsible for oversight of the Foundation's governance, operations and grant making and meets bi-annually, in July and December.
