"Thanks to the continued generosity of our donors and the leadership of the Board, the Telluride Foundation is able to distribute over a million dollars in Community Grants for the second year in a row. We are one of a very few foundations in the country that were able to increase grants given during this prolonged recession. We are extremely grateful to these generous donors who support the vital work that our community nonprofits and organizations do for all of us," said Joanne Corzine, Co-Chair of the Telluride Foundation.
In its 2010 annual Community Granting cycle, the Foundation received 87 applications seeking $1,484,010. The Foundation awarded grants to 77 of the 87 groups that applied, and awards ranged from $1,500 to $45,000, with 34 percent going to human services, 21 percent of the grants funding early childhood development, 20 percent to arts and culture, 14 percent to education, 6 percent to athletic groups, and 5 percent to the environment/animals. Local groups receiving grant awards include organizations serving Telluride, Ouray, Ridgway, Rico, Norwood, Nucla, Naturita, and Paradox. The Telluride Foundation supports many types of organizations in the community that serve the people who live or work in San Miguel County. A complete on-line searchable database of all grants can be found at http://www.telluridefoundation.org/index.php?page=grant-recipient-directory.
"In light of the economy, the Grants Committee seriously deliberated over each application, looking at the long term stability and sustainability of organizations; the Committee was hesitant to fund new or emerging programs," said Patricia Maxon, Chair of the Grants Committee. "We tried to balance the growing needs of health and human service programs due to the economy with the broad range of community organizations that serve the region from arts and culture to environmental stewardship."
New this year, the Foundation instituted an all electronic grants application system, where all grant applications and attachments were submitted online, and grants were reviewed by the Grants Committee using Apple iPads. "Overall we were very pleased with the new system," said April Montgomery, Programs Director at the Telluride Foundation, "The system reduced the paper coming through our office as well and seemed to be easier to use for most of our applicants. The investment in the iPads was paid in the first year and will be used multiple times, every year going forward." The Foundation plans to send out an electronic survey to all grant applicants during January to better understand how the Foundation can continue to improve the electronic application system and grant making process.
Also new this year, the Foundation awarded three multi-year grants. In response to requests for multi-year funding, the Foundation created a pilot multi-year funding opportunity, inviting the three nonprofits to participate. The San Miguel Resource Center, Mountain Film, and Rainbow Preschool each received funding commitments for the next three years, conditional on annual financial and program reporting requirements. During the next year, the Grants Committee will evaluate whether to expand and/or modify the pilot multi-year funding opportunity.
The Telluride Foundation's Community Grant award recommendations are drafted by the seven-member Grants Committee, all of whom sit on the Foundation's Board of Directors. The committee evaluates the grant requests against a rigorous set of criteria and forwards their slate of recommendations to the full Board for review and final approval. The Grants Committee is comprised of Chairman Patricia Maxon, George Parker, Dan Tishman, Allan Gerstle, Melanie Montoya, Brian O'Neill, and Susan Saint James. Their recommendations were reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors at its meeting on December 30th. The Foundation's next round of local grants will be announced in December of 2011, with applications due October 28, 2011.
In addition to its annual Community Grant awards, the Foundation has continued to expand its funding and the reach of its initiative-based granting programs such as the Local Healthcare Initiative, Bright Futures Early Childhood Development Fund, the family emergency Good Neighbor Fund, the Immigrant Integration Initiative - One Telluride, and the Special Initiatives Grant Program.
The Telluride Foundation exists to create a stronger Telluride community through the cultivation and promotion of philanthropy. It is a nonprofit, apolitical community foundation that provides year-round support for local organizations involved in arts, education, athletics, charitable causes, land conservation and other community-based efforts through technical assistance, education and grant making. As a grant maker, the Foundation awards grants to qualified applicants that serve the people living and/or working in the Telluride region for the purpose of enhancing the quality of life within the region.
